Kauto Star all set for season opener in the Betfair Chase

20.11.2009

As always, its Kauto Star that'll be the one to watch, as nine horsess take to the field in Saturday's Betfair Chase at Haydock.

The nine-year-old is the current favourite for the race at 2.24 and it will take a rare mistake or something special from one of his competitors, if he is to fail to regain the crown he last won in 2007.

The dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner is set to face testing conidtions, with rain and strong winds expected, but champion trainer Paul Nicholls is optimistic about his chances.

"Kauto Star worked very well on Wednesday morning ahead of his Haydock engagement in the Betfair Chase on Saturday and we are looking forward to his reappearance," said Nicholls on his website.

"He worked with Big Buck's, who is also in great form and heads to Newbury next week (for the Long Distance Hurdle)."

Standing in his way of the Gold Cup are eight oppponents, including potential each-way bets Madison Du Berlais (7.8) and Imperial Commander (11) as well as the 3.35 second favourite Notre Pere. The latter is likely to relish the conditions and as a result has received plenty of support from the horse racing tips professionals.

Trainer Jim Dreaper told At The Races that the weather could prove to be decisive. "He will go on any ground other than firm, but because of his lack of real pace, against horses with Kauto Star's pace, he's more effective when it becomes difficult for the others" said Dreaper.

"He schooled earlier in the week, is in great order and is ready to go."

While the opponents should not be underestimated, Kauto Star has a formidable chase record of 14 wins in 21 races and with many in the racing tips world predicting an unbeaten season, the smart money is surely on yet another victory for the French bred superstar.
