Cheltenham Festival Betting

9.03.2010

With all eyes now on the Cheltenham Festival I thought it about time to pass on a few Cheltenham betting tips for those planning to take on the bookies during the four-day National Hunt racing extravaganza.

Regular readers will know I've been crowing on about Punjabi (8/1) for ages now and I still believe he represents the best value in the Champion Hurdle field. Trained specifically for the race and starting to attract plenty of horse racing tips, the defending champion should get his ideal conditions for the first time this season and can prove last year's 22/1 success was no fluke.

Also on day one, I feel Voler La Vedette (5/2) is value to beat Quevega in the big mares' hurdle that concludes the card and see no reason whatsoever to change my mind.

Day two is probably the quietest betting day of the week for me, but I am seriously interested in Peddlers Cross (9/1) in the opening Neptune Novices Hurdle. This unbeaten gelding, trained by Donald McCain, has looked very smart and I believe has been underestimated.

Hey Big Spender (12/1) in the opening Jewson Novices' Handicap Chase on day three has a massive chance. He is definitely improving fast and Colin Tizzard's charge would be a much shorter price if trained by one of the more fashionable handlers. He looks tremendous value. The Queen's Barbers Shop (6/1) might just prove good enough to beat Poquelin and Tranquil Sea in what promises to be a tremendous race for the Ryanair Chase. He should appreciate the drop back in trip and the return to Cheltenham.

I'm not pulling any rabbits out of the hat in suggesting Kauto Star (4/5) will win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but I believe he should take care of Denman and the rest. Restless Harry (7/1) has a big chance in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle, while Get Me Out Of Here (10/1) in the County Hurdle and Oh Crick (16/1) in the concluding Grand Annual Chase are also worth more than a second glance.

All in all, there should be some excellent Cheltenham betting to be had if you look in the right places.
